Environmental Restoration

A major wind-farm developer negotiated the reclamation of a 90 hectare abandoned opencast coal quarry, as part of the development of the 54 turbine wind farm.

As well as seeking expertise to guide the reclamation, a new quarry extension was needed to provide additional road stone, for the site roads. The Local Councils, SNH and RSPB were keen that best practice should be used for the working and restoration for the quarry extension, and for the reclamation of the abandoned workings.

Our solution

EES staff have unrivalled experience in planning, working and restoring upland areas being worked for minerals and other large-scale developments. We were appointed to advise the developer and their contractors, and provided the essential working methods and monitoring to enable the site to proceed smoothly. Effective, large scale turf translocation was achieved using normal site equipment, which resulted in rapid vegetation re-establishment and which helped to minimise adverse environmental effects.

And the benefits

The practical experience and applied knowledge of EES contributed to the smooth progress and success of the project. Our understanding of both the reclamation and habitat management aspects of the project gave the stakeholders confidence in the progress of the Habitat Management Plan.
